IKON RUGGED PDAS WITH INTEGRATED BARCODE SCANNERS NOW AVAILABLE WITH ASSISTED GPS FROM VARLINK

Published 17th June 2009

Varlink, the York-based specialist distributor of mobile computing and associated barcode printing products, is pleased to announce that Ikôn WWAN variants are now available with assisted GPS (A-GPS).

A-GPS offers marked improvements in TTFF (time to first fixed) on pinpointing the location of the Ikôn unit. Regular GPS may take anywhere from one to ten minutes before acquiring a signal, depending on location, amount of interference and topography/horizon information. A-GPS reduces Time To First Fix (TTFF) and increases the likelihood of finding and keeping a fix in poor coverage areas such as indoor sites.

Barry Boyd, Psion Teklogix Product Manager commented “A-GPS downloads satellite ephemeris data to the Ikôn periodically through either a WLAN or WWAN connection. The downloaded data is used by the GPS module to speed the process of acquiring a fix.”

Bill Gordon, Varlink Technology Director added “the main benefits of Ikôn units with A-GPS are faster location acquisition and as well as location acquisition in ‘borderline’ coverage areas or in non-optimal environmental settings.”

Initially, A-GPS is only available on Ikôn variants with the Windows Mobile Operating System. From July’09 onwards, Windows CE5.0 units will be available with A-GPS too. A-GPS is a no-charge feature on all Ikôn WWAM variants. For details on the Ikôn features and capabilities, please visit our website at www.psionteklogixatvarlink.co.uk
